LAST June 17, I celebrated the Philippine Independence Day with more than 3,000 Filipino overseas workers in Barcelona. As a visiting professor in a business school in Barcelona, I consider myself a Filipino overseas worker. I look forward to occasionally visiting Filipino families and joining them in some of their activities in downtown Barcelona, very close to the famous Ramblas, where many of them work and reside. In the June l7 celebration, we were joined by a good number of top Barcelona officials representing different political parties. These officials recognize the important role that the Filipino workers play in supporting the city’s economic progress. One after another, the politicians praised the industry, entrepreneurship, cheerfulness, and loyalty of the Filipino immigrant workers.

Pinoy pilgrim

By FR. ROY CIMAGALA

That’s the title of a book written by a friend of mine. It’s subtitled, “In search of Filipino identity,” and is a personal testimony of what he thinks is our national character and the rich potentials that character possesses.

Book Review: The Unlikely Pilgrim

The Unlikely Pilgrim

Pinoy Pilgrim”, the book destined to shake the Filipino psyche and make us look at ourselves from a fresh perspective is off the press. I was one of the few privileged to review the draft before it came to print. “Pinoy Pilgrim” is an exceptionally good read for its interesting and illuminating content. The author, Manoling de Leon, is a master of his craft; a good story-teller weaving into a whole cloth his personal philosophies and experiences; the legacy and tradition of his family; and, the events leading to the declaration of Martial Law in 1972. This is seen with his personal involvement with the two most powerful persons of the time, President Ferdinand Marcos and the businessman and King Maker, Eugenio Lopez. Every chapter of the book is filled with experiences of the author that blend with flowing historical account of his time. A must read for all Pinoys.
