For forty years now, I end the month of November by starting a personal Novena to the Immaculate Conception. This year, I have a simple request from Mama Mary: Help all the Mothers in the world to be like her. I pray that mothers realize the tremendous power they exercise in this world: the power to give life, cure wounds, and restore dead spirits with a smile or a look. I ask that they enjoy the grace to fulfill their special, unique role in the family as wives and mothers. I implore that more mothers learn how to practice grace under pressure, when finances are short, the kids are sick, and the husbands are not fulfilling their end of the bargain. Mothers are the heart and soul of the family. Therefore, they are the heart and soul of any society. Mothers have a very important part to play. In the past, how mothers played their part in family and society affected the rise or fall of kingdoms, cultures and civilizations. Would Alexander be Great if his mother, Olympias, did not have her husband Philip assassinated and viciously eliminate the other pretenders to the Macedonian throne? Julius Caesar’s mother had herself opened up when the baby proved too large to come out the natural way (hence, the Caesarian operation). Rome was Christianized because the Emperor’s mother and wife were devout Christians. Magellan discovered the Philippines because his wife nagged him to earn more to feed their baby. Some years earlier, Columbus discovered America after losing his rich and lovely wife: no honey, no money. The Queen of Spain both served was a mother too. Hitler hated the Jews because he thought they poisoned his beloved mother, Clara, who died of breast cancer. Obama became the first African-American President because his mother was an American. Otherwise, he would just be an ordinary notary in a Third World country. As mothers go, so does the world. What sort of universe would the RH Bill produce? Or, how would mothers in the Philippines look like thirty years from now if the RH Bill passes? I looked at my crystal ball and saw…nothing but darkness. The Philippines was no more. In its place was a desert, devoid of life. What happened? The RH Bill promised progress by making artificial birth control products accessible to the women. So, women used it. As everyone knows, the RH Bill assumed that men and women in the Philippines are sex maniacs and rapists who copulate irresponsibly. In theory, our birth rates should have gone down and our economy should have gone up, but in reality, while we had less births, the economy tanked. Why? The RH Bill in one fell swoop, promising greater dignity for women through better control of reproductive rights, abolished the mystiques of womanhood and motherhood. Motherhood and reproduction being two sides of the same coin, throwing away the one throws away the other. A corrupt policy implemented by a corrupt government is like the best-laid plans of mice and men. Artificial birth control means artificial dignity. Eradicate motherhood and you reduce the male incentive to work and lead the population to extinction. What the world needs are real women. Only real women can be real mothers, and only real mothers can raise real human beings, especially men, who really are the weaker sex. Manoling de Leon Senior Citizen Republic of the Philippines |
